Monovision, sometimes referred to as blended vision, is a corrective solution for patients who have presbyopia or are dealing with the results of a normal aging eye. Patients who find it difficult to focus on objects may deal with certain challenges, especially those who use reading glasses. By using certain corrective measures, patients in the Skokie, IL area can improve their vision and reduce their dependence on aids such as reading glasses. Dr. Stuart P. Sondheimer and her team of professionals are here to help you understand your vision concerns and how to address them appropriately based on the severity of your condition and your age.
How does monovision work?
The eye functions by sending light through the cornea and the lens. The light is then focused on the retina, which is located at the back of the eye. The retina is responsible for converting the light into electrical impulses that are sent to the brain. The brain then interprets these impulses as images.
As we age, our eyes may not be able to focus on objects as well as they once did. This is due to a condition called presbyopia. Presbyopia occurs when the eye’s lens begins to harden and loses its flexibility. As a result, patients may have difficulty reading or seeing objects up close.
Monovision works by correcting one eye for distance vision and one eye for near vision. This allows the brain to combine the two images and provide the patient with improved vision. Monovision can be achieved through a variety of methods, including glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.
Who is a good candidate for monovision?
Monovision may not be ideal for everyone. In order to determine if you are a good candidate, Dr. Stuart P. Sondheimer will need to perform a comprehensive eye examination. He will assess your eyesight and discuss your medical history and vision goals with you.
